She slid into the passenger seat and shut her door, avoiding eye contact with Chip. Cowardly? Perhaps. But she knew he wouldn’t hold back. He hadn’t since they started working together and she liked that about him. There was no need to hide their feelings. If he didn’t like something—or she didn’t—he should say it.

“The law office of Gabe McCord.”

She stared out the window at the sign Chip had read sitting in front of the small building.

“And what did he have to say?”

“Mr. Thompson isn’t his client.” She almost cursed out loud but managed to hold it in. “Yet.”

“So, Mr. Thompson is planning to call him. Is Mr. McCord a criminal lawyer?”

Good question. Olivia wasn’t sure. Based on the few chats they had about their prospective jobs, she didn’t think so. That didn’t mean he wouldn’t take on that kind of case. She had no idea what he might do. All she knew was she had no control over it. Despite the way he tried to show her what she was asking of him, he was right. She couldn’t tell him who to take as a client just because she didn’t like it.

“I don’t think so.” She finally looked at Chip. “Bottom line, we won’t be getting much help from Mr. Thompson now that he wants a lawyer. Screams guilty to me.”

“It looks suspicious. I agree. There’s one bowling alley in town. Since he didn’t give us the name of the bowling alley, let’s check that out first. Then we can pay Mrs. Thompson a visit without her son in attendance.”

“Great plan of attack. Let’s go.”

“So Gabe McCord…”

She waited for Chip to continue instead of feeding him any kind of answer. Of course, it didn’t take a genius to figure out what he was getting at. He had to have heard the rumors around the station that she was married to him. Word traveled fast as soon as it got out.

“I thought you got this case for an entirely different reason.”

Her head whipped to his, although he didn’t look at her as he had to keep his eyes on the road. She forgot to call her dad yesterday.

Okay, she might’ve purposely forgot to call. She wasn’t ready to argue with him, and she knew they would argue when she demanded to know what hand he had in her coming to Minnesota.

“Don’t stop there.”

He chuckled and flipped his blinker to take a right. “You’re married to Gabe.”

“So now you think I got this case because I’m married to Gabe and what? His brother happens to be a firefighter.”

Chip shook his head. “No, it’s just…odd.”

Well, she couldn’t disagree with the assessment.

“Let’s call it a small world, Chip. No one knew we were married until I got here.” Including her. Of course, she kept that part to herself.

“Is there going to be problems between you two if he takes Mr. Thompson on as a client?”

She sure hoped not. But they’d find out soon enough. If there would be problems, Chip didn’t need to be privy to that—or anyone else, for that matter.
